Burger King Introduces “Unhappy Meals” + Home Cooking Why and How

New fast food chain meal deals by Burger King are rolling out in a few major U.S. cities, including Seattle, New York, Los Angeles, Austin and Miami. McDonald’s has Happy Meals and now Burger King has this honesty campaign with “Unhappy Meals” which actually has a good motive, to raise awareness about mental health.

… The initiative isn’t just a jab at McDonald’s — it’s in collaboration with the organization Mental Health America to raise awareness for Mental Health Month, which takes place during May. “While not everyone would think about pairing fast food and mental health, MHA believes in elevating the conversation in all communities in order to address mental illness Before Stage 4,” said Paul Gionfriddo, president and CEO of MHA.

Stage 4 refers to the stage with the highest severity of symptoms of mental illness, which MHA describes as persistent, severe and life-threatening. MHA’s Before Stage 4 campaign works to address mental health issues before they reach that point.

Burger King released a commercial to coincide with the new boxes, in which several people having various kinds of bad days admit that it’s OK to not be OK all the time. The ad swaps Burger King’s iconic “Have it your way” slogan with “Feel your way.”

To really increase mental and physical health and to save money, you should be cooking your own food and avoiding fast food altogether. For many people the problem is fear of cooking, not knowing what to buy or how to prepare it. Others haven’t yet learned why home cooking has a huge pay off. What are you going to do with the time you “save” from eating fast food? Is it still a time savings if you must pay this saved time back later with chronic health problems?

There are a few companies that deliver healthy home cooked meals as a bridge to cooking for yourself, but these are generally not available everywhere and will cost more than doing it yourself .

If you want to start on a program that leads you through cooking your own food to improve your health, I still recommend Chris Kresser’s 14four.me program. I did it years ago and I’m still glad I did.

The program takes you through what to buy, supplies you need and how to prepare your new healthy food. I got a system down to cooking once per day at dinner where I’d make lunch for the next day at that time as well. With a quick breakfast the time investment to cook your own food can be quite affordable. It took time to find the stores with ingredients needed and to learn to prepare and adjust the recipes for my tastes, but once you have it down, it goes much faster and is a fun activity.

Put on some music as you cook, watch a show in the background, try an educational podcast. Healthy eating can be part of an enjoyable lifestyle.
