Alert: Massive Manhattan Power Outage

Strange News Alert: In a 42 year coincidence, Con Edison, the power company for the Manhattan area says a transformer fire was responsible for power loss to 73,000 customers tonight. It was 42 years ago today in 1977 that the city of New York had its famous power outage. The huge outage tonight began around 7 pm NY time and power is still just coming back in places. At 9:10 pm California time, 12:10 am New York time, the ConEdison site says there are 37 different power outages in Manhattan still with now only 1,322 customers still having problems.

“CBS2 began to hear reports that that all restaurants had gone dark in Hell’s Kitchen around 7 p.m. Saturday evening – 42 years to the day after the famous 1977 blackout in New York City.“

Strange coincidence.

The cause for the reported transformer fire has not been revealed.

At the outage map on the Con Edison site, if you zoom in to see a white triangle (single outage) you can click that and see details. All of the outages I saw said the cause is pending investigation.

Science fiction fans may recall that 42 happens to be the answer to the ultimate question, the meaning of life, the universe, and everything in the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series, the first weekly radio show of which aired in 1978.

  1. We already ban water-cooled air conditioning on environmental grounds. Now we need to mandate that air conditioning only operate on solar power. Air conditioning has caused our worst blackouts. It’s time to take it off the grid. If you run air conditioning by solar all day while you are away, your house won’t need to be cooled at night. Sun caused the blackouts, let it fix them!
