The Ocean Explorer locates massive circle at the Seabed

Posted by Xeno on June 12, 2012

The so-called “Baltic Sea UFO” has been relocated by divers on the research vessel Ocean Explorer and reports confirm there is a massive object on the seabed in the exact location found on sonar last year.

The research vessel, aka the OceanX, has returned to the spot off the Swedish coast where a gigantic, sunken object was spotted on video last November.

Images posted to the web stirred a gigantic debate about its origins, going so far as to speculate it bore an uncanny resemblance to the “Millennium Falcon” spaceship at the center of the Star Wars saga.

Others calmly pointed out that the massive, circular object was either a natural formation or the remains of Russian warships sunk to the bottom decades, maybe even a century ago. …

In one-of-a-kind photo, Hubble and Venus cross sun

French astrophotographer Thierry Legault captured this view of the Hubble Space Telescope passing over the sun’s disk during this week’s transit of Venus. The circles highlight the Hubble on multiple exposures taken every tenth of a second during the telescope’s 0.9-second transit.

scientists: Airborne imaging of Honduras’s Mosquito Coast might show lost city of Ciudad Blanca

Posted by Xeno on June 12, 2012

Lost city.Since Spanish explorer Herman Cortes first noted the existence of Ciudad Blanca, the White City, in 1526, archaeologists, explorers and treasure hunters have been searching for the site, reputed to contain vast wealth. Many have claimed to find it, including the CIA’s Theodore Morde, who based the bizarre travelogue “Lost City of the Monkey God” on it. None of those claims have held water, however, and contemporary archaeologists are not even sure the city ever existed.

But now a team from the University of Houston, using laser-based light detection and ranging (LIDAR) from a survey plane, have found the ruins of an ancient city deep in Honduras’ Mosquito Coast region and hidden by centuries of jungle growth. The city may or may not be Ciudad Blanca, but it certainly appears to be a major archaeological site.

Ciudad Blanca plays a central role in many Central American stories and mythology. It has been cited as the birthplace of the Aztec god Quetzalcoatl. Some previous “sightings” have included reports of golden idols and elaborately carved white stones, which have given the city its name. No reputable source has verified these claims, however. …

Proof? Scientists in Siberia: Yeti Exists

Posted by Xeno on June 12, 2012

Yetimage: The Abominable Snowman, a 50s horror film, would probably be dismissed by modern yeti enthusiasts as bunkum.

Scientists and yeti enthusiasts believe there may finally be solid evidence that the apelike creature roams the vast Siberian tundra, reports the Guardian.

A team of a dozen-plus experts from as far afield as Canada and Sweden have proclaimed themselves 95% certain of the mythical animal’s existence after a daylong conference in the town of Tashtagol in the Kemerovo region, some 2,000 miles east of Moscow. In recent years, locals there have reported sightings of the yeti, also known as the abominable snowman.

The Kemerovo government announced on Oct. 10 that a two-day expedition the previous weekend to the region’s Azassky cave and Karatag peak “collected irrefutable evidence” of yetis’ existence on the wintry plateau.

“Conference participants came to the conclusion that the artifacts found give 95% evidence of the habitation of the ‘snow man’ on Kemerovo region territory,” read a statement. “In one of the detected tracks, Russian scientist Anatoly Fokin noted several hairs that might belong to the yeti,” it added. The group also discovered footprints, a presumed bed and various other markers.

The scientific community has historically disputed the existence of the yeti given scant conclusive evidence. But numerous sightings of such creatures have been reported in Himalayan countries and in North America, where it is known as Sasquatch, or bigfoot. …

Full moon affects Large Hadron Collider operations

Posted by Xeno on June 12, 2012

Biologists often have to do some very technically difficult experiments that, for one or another mysterious reason, will sometimes fail and fail badly. It’s not unheard of for the victims of these failures to jokingly blame the phase of the Moon. But it was a bit of a surprise to find out that the physicists running the LHC actually do see odd behavior caused by the phase of the Moon.

As the LHC’s Pauline Gagnon describes at the Quantum Diaries, the changing force exerted by the Moon as it orbits—the same thing that drives the tides—creates subtle differences in the position of the hardware within the LHC. The differences are tiny for any individual piece of hardware, but they add up when it comes to something as big as the LHC, which has a circumference of nearly 27km. Plus, the LHC hardware is very, very sensitive to being out of alignment, given that it has to accurately direct bunches of protons that are moving at nearly the speed of light.

The net result is that the LHC’s operators sporadically have to tweak the beam’s alignments, leading to a temporary drop in the rate of collisions, seen as periodic dips in the plot above. According to Gagnon, the operators also have to make tweaks in response to everything from the level of water in nearby Lake Geneva to the passage of the French high-speed rail. …

‘Dead’ boy wakes up and asks for water at funeral in Brazil

Posted by Xeno on June 12, 2012

Website ORM claimed that Kelvin Santos stopped breathing during treatment for pneumonia at a hospital in Belem, northern Brazil. He was declared dead at 7.40pm on Friday and his body was handed over to his family in a plastic bag.

The child’s devastated family took him home where grieving relatives held a wake throughout the night, with the boy’s body laid in an open coffin.

But an hour before his funeral was due to take place on Saturday the boy apparently sat up in his coffin and said: “Daddy, can I have some water?”.

The boy’s father, Antonio Santos, said: “Everybody started to scream, we couldn’t believe our eyes. Then we thought a miracle had taken place and our boy had come back to life

Then Kelvin just laid back down, the way he was. We couldn’t wake him. He was dead again.

“Mr Santos rushed his son back to the Aberlardo Santos hospital in Belem, where the doctors reexamined the boy and confirmed that he had no signs of life.

He said: “They assured me that he really was dead and gave me no explanation for what we had just seen and heard.”

The boy’s family decided to delay the funeral for an hour in the hope that he would wake up again, but ended up burying him at 5pm that day in a local cemetery.Convinced that his son was victim of medical malpractice, Mr Santos has now registered a complaint with the police who have launched an investigation

He said: “Fifteen minutes after rushing him away for resuscitation, they came and told me he was dead and handed me his body. Perhaps they didn’t examine him properly. Dead people don’t just wake up and talk. I’m determined to find out the truth.

“The local state department today confirmed the boy had been admitted to hospital in a critical condition and was declared dead after suffering cardiac-respiratory failure.
