Google introduced arguably its greatest doodle ever this morning, an interactive electric guitar to honor the 96th birthday of legendary musician and guitar innovator Les Paul.

The doodle is definitely a whole lot of fun, but can also be incredibly addicting. Children eschew the fat if dads aren’t lenient

Posted by Xeno on June 9, 2011

This Father’s Day, dad’s choice of where to eat could literally tip the scales on his children’s health.

A father’s use of restaurants and his perceptions of family meals carry more weight, so to speak, than mothers’, according to a Texas AgriLife Research study, published recently in The Journal of Nutrition Education and Behavior.

“Dads who think that dinner time is a special family time certainly do not see a fast-food restaurant as an appropriate place for that special family time, so this means that his kids are spending less time in those places. Dads who have no trouble eating food in a fast-food restaurant are going to be more likely to have kids who do so,” said Dr. Alex McIntosh, AgriLife Research sociologist.

New research indicates that father’s are more likely than mother’s to have an impact on childhood obesity. A study by Texas AgriLife Research showed that lenient fathers allow their children more trips to fast-food restaurants which have been linked to obesity in children. The study began as a 15-month look at parents’ use of time and how that impacted meal choices. It aimed at the difference between fast-food and full-service restaurants because numerous studies have shown a correlation between fast-food consumption and weight gain.

Of particular interest for the research, funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, was parental choice of restaurants as a connection to childhood obesity, McIntosh said. …

Rosetta comet chaser goes into deep sleep

Posted by Xeno on June 9, 2011

Rosetta (Nasa)Europe’s Rosetta spacecraft, which is heading for a rendezvous with a comet in 2014, has been put into hibernation by its controllers. The command was sent from Germany on Wednesday, instructing the probe to enter a deep sleep. Only heaters and an “alarm clock” have been left running.Nothing will be heard from the spacecraft for the next two-and-a-half years – not even a reassuring beep.Rosetta should wake up at 1000 GMT on 20 January 2014.Assuming it does, the spacecraft will then be just a few months away from its appointment with Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko out near the Planet Jupiter. The plan is for it to orbit the 4km-wide ball of ice and dust and put a small lander on its surface.”The spacecraft may now be at rest but the team has a busy time ahead, getting ready for the meeting with the comet,” said Dr Gerhard Schwehm, the European Space Agency’s Esa Rosetta mission manager.”I expect I will be a little nervous on 20 January 2014, and I might not sleep the night before – but I’ll be really excited as well,” he told BBC News. …
