A better theory than my time traveler idea, to be sure, however, the way I read this, they had several different measures to show that movement of a former sea bed to this area was not the answer... but perhaps some other forces like tornadoes carried early sea beasts inland and dumped them in lakes.

Plate tectonics means that the earth's surface is constantly moving. There are many areas that are on land now, that used to be marine, but due to the movement of the plates and the creation/destruction of new/old crust is now on land. The oldest crust is found on land, that does not mean it didn't originate in the ocean.

By my house, very much inland, there is a river that you can find shark teeth in. Its not because at one time the sharks could swim in freshwater and then adapted to live in the ocean, its because the plates moved and the river was formed trapping the sharks there, they then died and their fossils remained.
