Hot Solar Winds: Energy Simulation Explains Physical Mystery Of The Voyager

Posted by Xeno on February 27, 2009

Recognized for over 60 years The 5/3 law According to Kolmogorov s theory there is a relationship between the size of eddies and the amount of energy released or dissipated by hot solar particles. The smaller an eddy gets the more it interacts with its surroundings so the greater the energy loss. For example this can be observed in the turbulent wake caused by a bridge piling in a flowing river. The energy of the tumbling wake dissipates only at the edges where the smallest eddies interact with the smooth flowing water. The Kolmogorov law set the exponents for the relationship between eddy size and energy at 5/3: In a dynamic fluid the amount of energy released should increase by a factor of x5/3 when the size of the eddy is reduced by a factor of x. 7/3 law: Efficiency increases by 40 percent Observations made by the Voyager other spacecraft and satellites show that the energy flow in plasma tends to follow a 7 3 law rather than the so-called 5 3 law proposed by Kolmogorov. The dynamic spectrum of the wave lengths in plasma is therefore significantly greater than in other hydrodynamic systems. The efficiency of energy transfer between hot particles carried in the solar wind and cooler particles increases by 40 percent. The computer model developed by Shukla and Shaikh explains the sudden increase by the interaction between magnetic fields and the outward flowing currents of hot atoms ions and electrons. The magnetic field is responsible for energy cascades. Influenced and constrained by magnetic fields the small eddies serve to “damp” the energy in them. Explanation for gigantic quantities of cosmic energy “This is the same kind of thing that happens in a microwave oven ” Shaikh said. “If there is nothing there the microwaves go out without releasing their energy. But the microwaves are absorbed by the food causing them to release the energy and heat the food.” “This development of the two scientists helps us to understand how the particles in the solar wind contain enormous quantities of energy. Prof. Shukla continued “It might also explain where the fastest and most powerful cosmic rays get their boost.” Scientists have struggled for decades to find plausible natural processes that could explain how some cosmic rays atoms stripped of their electrons are accelerated to almost the speed of light.”

Odd Life Found in Great Lakes

Posted by Xeno on February 27, 2009

See full size imageScientists have found some odd life forms in Lake Huron.

Peculiar geological formations are supporting floating plumes and purple mats of microbes dwelling in enclaves of the Great Lake, researchers report. The odd biology is more akin to what is found in some of Earth’s most extreme environments.

The mats are located about 66 feet (20 meters) below the surface of Lake Huron — the third largest of North America’s Great Lakes — where researchers have found sinkholes made by water dissolving parts of an ancient underlying seabed.

Around these sinkholes are brilliant purple mats of cyanobacteria — cousins of microbes found at the bottoms of permanently ice-covered lakes in Antarctica — and pallid, floating ponytails of other microbial life. The water there is dense, oxygen-free and salty, and therefore hostile to most familiar, larger forms of life in the lakes.

The scientists report that some deep sinkholes act as catch basins for dead and decaying plant and animal matter and collect a soft black sludge of sediment topped by a bacterial film.

These environments are also similar to those around deep-sea hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, where many odd forms of life have also been found.

In the oxygen-depleted water, cyanobacteria carry out photosynthesis using sulfur compounds rather than water and give off hydrogen sulfide, the smelly rotten-egg gas. Where the sinkholes are deeper still and light fails, microorganisms use chemical means rather than photosynthesis to metabolize the sulfurous nutrients. …

Briton hooks giant ray

Posted by Xeno on February 27, 2009

Worlds biggest fish catch - Brit fisherman Ian Welch has landed the largest ever freshwater fish during a trip to Thailand. 11 stone Ian(45) landed the 55 stone monster after a 90 minute battle that nearly pulled him over the side of his boat.BRITISH angler Ian Welch has landed a world record with this monster – a giant stingray which is the biggest freshwater fish ever caught using a rod and line.

Ian hooked the FIFTY FIVE STONE beast – which nearly pulled him over the side of the boat several times during a 90 MINUTE battle – before he landed it.

It took THIRTEEN grown men to heave the fish – which is the size of a garden shed – out of the water.

Weighing 771lbs it smashed the previous record of 646lbs for a huge catfish caught in 2005.

Ian, a freshwater biologist, had been visiting Thailand to help with a stingray tagging programme when he hooked the denizen of the deep on the Maeklong River. …

Its body was 7ft long and 7ft wide its tail measured 10ft and its lethal venomous barb had to be wrapped in cloth while it was out of the water.

The giant freshwater stingray is listed as a vulnerable species on the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s red list….

Florida tests using magnets to repel crocodiles

Posted by Xeno on February 27, 2009

Florida wildlife managers have launched an experiment to see if they can keep crocodiles from returning to residential neighborhoods by temporarily taping magnets to their heads to disrupt their “homing” ability. Researchers at Mexico s Crocodile Museum in Chiapas reported in a biology newsletter they had some success with the method using it to permanently relocate 20 of the reptiles since 2004.

“We said Hey we might as well give this a try ” Lindsey Hord the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission s crocodile response coordinator said on Tuesday. Crocodiles are notoriously territorial and when biologists move them from urban areas to new homes in the wild they often go right back to the place where they were captured traveling up to 10 miles a week to get there. Scientists believe they rely in part on the Earth s magnetic fields to navigate and that taping magnets to both sides of their heads disorients them. “They re just taped on temporarily ” Hord said. “We just put the magnets on when they re captured and since they don t know where we take them they re lost. The hope would be that they stay where we take them to.”

Hord and his co-workers have tried it on two crocodiles since launching the experiment in January affixing “a common old laboratory magnet” to both sides of the animals heads. One got run over by a car and died but the other has yet to return Hord said. Once an endangered species American crocodiles numbers have rebounded to nearly 2,000 in coastal south Florida their only habitat in the continental United States. That puts them in increasing contact with humans especially in areas where backyards border on canals around Miami and the Florida Keys. …

Was the “New Age Movement” a CIA mind control creation?

Posted by Xeno on February 27, 2009

Wisdom From ACIM CardsA Course in Miracles, published in 1975, is a book considered by its students to be their “spiritual path” – some have labelled it the “New Age Bible”. It has sold millions of copies. But could it have been part of a CIA mind control experiment? One of its authors was definitely a key MKULTRA scientist. …

Schucman dreamt that Jesus spoke to her and revealed a new teaching. Schucman reported that she clearly heard from the voice the words, “This is a course in miracles. Please take notes.” Schucman did as she was told, and for the next seven years, via a process she described as “rapid inner dictation”, she produced nearly thirty notebooks of Jesus messages. With the assistance of her employer, Prof William Thetford, she later collated this into a text which formed the basis of the Course.

From Mind Control to New Age

For five years after his graduation in 1949, Thetford had worked as a research psychologist in both Chicago, and later in Washington, DC. According to Dr Colin Ross, Thetford worked on Project BLUEBIRD, an early CIA mind control program, from 1951 to 1953. He spent 1954 and 1955 as the director of clinical psychology at the Institute of Living in Hartford, Connecticut. From 1955 to 1957 he was an assistant professor of psychology at Cornell University’s CIA-funded Society for the Investigation of Human Ecology (a euphemism for social ‘mind control’). In 1958 he accepted an assistant professorship, which later developed into a full professorship, at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. During a portion of this same period he also served as the director of clinical psychology at the Columbia-Presbyterian Hospital. It was here that he would stay for the next twenty years, during which he received funding from the CIA’s MKULTRA program for research into personality structures, and it was here that he first met and hired Dr. Helen Schucman, hiring her as a research psychologist and assistant.

via Histories & Mysteries » Was the “New Age Movement” a CIA mind control creation?.

I don’t know much about MKUltra, just what is on wikipedia, but I have grown up around New Age thinking people. It’s an interesting religion to me, because the “New Ager’s”, as I call them, often don’t recognize that they are part of a group with shared beliefs and values.

The New Age is definitely a heterogeneous movement of individuals; most graft some new age beliefs onto their regular religious affiliation. Recent surveys of US adults (2) indicate that many Americans hold at least some new age beliefs:

8% believe in astrology as a method of foretelling the future
7% believe that crystals are a source of healing or energizing power
9% believe that Tarot Cards are a reliable base for life decisions
about 1 in 4 believe in a non-traditional concept of the nature of God which are often associated with New Age thinking:
11% believe that God is “a state of higher consciousness that a person may reach”
8% define God as “the total realization of personal, human potential”
3% believe that each person is God. – sullivan

Why would the CIA want to start a religious movement? I don’t see the benefit. From what I have experienced around the New Agers, I don’t see a group of government super brains is orchestrating their beliefs that crystals have special powers. Rather, it seems like people love to pass on positive stories, to feel like they belong, and to feel they have value and special knowledge.

The same drives that lead some to accumulate scientific knowledge in a University also exist in those who follow the New Age life path. The detailed knowledge some of these people have about crystals, Tarot and the like is quite impressive. Their “knowledge” is, however, not probed by scientific method. It is deemed correct simply because the person they heard it from said other things they had also heard, and because they liked the message. I find it as credible as astrology: mostly harmless, somewhat fun and at times highly entertaining. The CIA did not create astrology.

Black bear making its way across St. Tammany

Posted by Xeno on February 27, 2009

According to the St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s office, a black bear, being monitored by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, is moving through St. Tammany Parish.

The bear was spotted this week in the area of Perilloux Rd. and Hwy 22 east of Madisonville .

“Officials from Wildlife tell us that the bear isn’t terribly aggressive,” said Sheriff’s spokesman George Bonnette. “But, certainly, we wanted to let our residents know that it’s out there.”

Bonnette says people should not approach or try to feed the bear.

“There still is the potential for harm,” he said.

Wildlife officials say the animal is a young adult Louisiana black bear, approximately 3 to 4 feet tall, weighing approximately 300 lbs. He is thought to be from Iberville Parish and is likely moving east.

According to officials with the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, this type of bear is not predatory or aggressive by nature.

“Wildlife told me that their recommendation would be to treat it as a 300 pound stray dog,” Bonnette said.

Louisiana black bears are an endangered species, and are protected by federally and state laws.

My crashed Acer laptop

Posted by Xeno on February 26, 2009

No new posts due to my laptop being dead… Check back Friday. This was my second and last Acer laptop. The Aspire 5610′s screen caught on fire and started smoking while I was  watching the Return of Spinal Tap. They fixed it, but a few months later I had a green line down the center of the screen and then several keys stopped working. I thought it was a virus, but the same problem existed even in the BIOS.  My “y” key was dead, so I couldn’t say yes! Ended up using Alt 121 or something as a replacement for Y and that worked.  Happy with the Gateway so far… with HDMI input I may be able to get videos uploaded from my camera now.

Pair rescued in Bermuda Triangle

Posted by Xeno on February 24, 2009

Stuart Armstrong and Andrea Davison A man from Greater Manchester has spoken about being rescued near the Bermuda Triangle after being lost at sea for 40 days.

Stuart Armstrong, 51, from Stockport and his partner Andrea Davison, 48, from Newcastle, got into difficulty when their yacht’s rudder broke.

The couple had set off from the Cape Verde Islands and were 1,200 miles from their destination in Antigua.

Mr Armstrong said: “This has not put us off, we are looking to sail again.”

Mr Armstrong and Miss Davison were stranded because the fault meant the vessel would only move in circles.

Mr Armstrong added: “We spent the next 40 days dragging things from one side of the boat to the other and using makeshift rudders.

“We were rescued on the last day of our food and drink supplies, but we don’t have a scratch or a bruise on us.”

After experiencing some terrible weather conditions the couple managed to raise the alarm with the US coastguards who contacted an Italian tanker to help them.

Mr Armstrong said the most dangerous part was the rescue itself on 18 February – when the 600ft Indian Point drew up along side their 40ft yacht.

The tanker, with the couple on board, is expected to dock in Amsterdam on Sunday.

Gene could allow lab-grown teeth

Posted by Xeno on February 24, 2009

teethScientists believe they have found a way to grow teeth in the laboratory, a discovery that could put an end to fillings and dentures.

The US team from Oregon have located the gene responsible for the growth of enamel, the hard outer layer of teeth which cannot grow back naturally.

Other scientists are already growing the inner parts of teeth in animals – but they have no hard enamel coatings.

The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences work may plug this gap.

Experiments in mice have shown that the gene, a “transcription factor” called Ctip2, has several functions involving immune responses and the development of skin and nerves.

The work at Oregon State University made the link with enamel by studying mice bred to lack Ctip2.

Lead researcher Dr Chrissa Kioussi said: “It’s not unusual for a gene to have multiple functions, but before this we didn’t know what regulated the production of tooth enamel.”

The scientists found that Ctip2 was crucial for the enamel-producing cells, called ameloblasts, to form and work properly.

Dr Kioussi said: “This is the first transcription factor ever found to control the formation and maturation of ameloblasts, which are the cells that secrete enamel.”

Controlling the gene in conjunction with stem-cell technology could make the artificial creation of functional teeth a real possibility.

Alternatively, the knowledge could be used to strengthen existing enamel and repair damaged enamel, cutting decay and the need for fillings.

Dr Kioussi said: “A lot of work would still be needed to bring this to human applications, but it should work. It could be really cool, a whole new approach to dental health.” …

Great!  “Grow some new teeth, Bob?” “Yeah, I had some coffee stains, so I grew these last night at home in a vat.”  Teeth could be the first of many parts we learn to regrow.

Want to live longer? You need this nutrient

Posted by Xeno on February 24, 2009

Image: Salmon… The final product is a fine-grained beige substance that looks like flour but is, in fact, a triumph of technology: smelly fish oil, transformed by industry into a tasteless, odorless powder. It will be used to spike everything from infant formula in China to the Wonder Bread and Tropicana orange juice on our supermarket shelves.

Ocean Nutrition is not manufacturing some Soylent Green for the new millennium.

After seven years and $50 million of research, the company’s 45 technicians and 14 Ph.D.s have found a high-tech way of getting a crucial set of nutrients back into our bodies — compounds that, thanks to the industrialization of agriculture over the past half century, have been thoroughly stripped from our food supply without, until recently, it being realized by anyone.

Now, an ever-growing body of research is showing that the epidemic of diseases associated with the Western diet — cancer, heart disease, depression, and much more — might be curtailed simply by restoring something we never should have removed from our diets in the first place: omega-3 fatty acids.

The great mistake

We are, it is often — and accurately — said, what we eat. Recent diet trends, from Atkins to South Beach, have put the emphasis on upping our intake of protein or cutting out carbohydrates. Meanwhile, cholesterol, saturated fats, and trans fats have been stigmatized, leading to the belief that waging a total war on fat is the best way to get a slimmer waistline and a longer life. But fats are as crucial to a healthy body as protein is; they end up holstered into the heart, protecting organs, and building the cells of the brain, an organ that is itself 60 percent fat. The key to good health lies not in ruthlessly striking fat from our diets, but in eating the best possible fats for our bodies. And a growing chorus of nutritionists agrees that those fats are omega-3s. …
