Here is what seems to be the opening sequence to a UFO TV show I’ve never heard of.

Superman vs. Batman movie
Posted by Xeno on September 19, 2008
I guess this is supposed to be before they join the Justice League together with Wonder Woman and Aquaman? Vote for who would win at superman vs batman. Wow, I agree with this David C guy:
Superman would kick batmans ass. This is why. Everyone assumes this is going to be some type of ring match. Anyone with some sense of imagination would realize could come up with a hundred scenerios where superman wins. Here is one. Superman does go rogue. Flies to metropolis, hangs out far above the city and x-rays everything will eventually find batman. Then he just a) uses his eye beams and kills him from a great distance, b) drops a mountain on him, c) knocks a skyscraper over on him, d) thows any high velocity projectile weighing several tons at batman. In no way would batman ever even get close to me if I were Superman.
-David C
But I was shocked that the majority favors the Batman.

Viking Spiderman in US flag cape hangs banner, repels down building, doesn’t get away.
Posted by Xeno on September 19, 2008
A caped man free-climbed the Morgan Library wall Thursday afternoon, dropped a giant green banner that said, “Guck the Fuverment” and rappelled down the south side of the
building to cheering students and waiting police.
The man, who wore an American flag cape and a novelty viking cap, declined comment as CSU police took him into custody around noon.
The man, who has not yet been identified, tried to flee on a bike stashed in the bushes then tried to juke several police officers on scene as students from classrooms and the plaza stood by. Gaelle Burges, a soil and crop department employee was smoking a cigarette outside the main doors of the library when the scene took place.
She said that the man ran through the plaza and scaled the face of the library in less than 20 seconds. Burges, junior open-option major Katie Rivera, and senior construction management major Tom Kirschenheuter all called the man the “Viking Spiderman.”
Collin Czarnecki, a junior journalism major, witnessed the scene from his Eddy classroom. He said that the caped man rappelled with a rope off the back side of the library and tried to flee by bike from a motorcycle policeman, but had his cape caught in the spokes and failed to escape on foot. – col
Colorado State University Police must have an impressive response time. Interesting way to end a college careeer… assuming he was a student.

Republicans: Easily Startled
Posted by Xeno on September 19, 2008
Boo! Ah! I see you are a republican. Keep watching the monkey. It is going to scream and spiders will pop out of its eyes. Just kidding. … or am I?
Your stance on key political issues may be directly related to how jumpy you are, a small but compelling new study suggests.
In the study, released Thursday in the journal Science, Rice University professor of political science John Alford and his colleagues studied 46 subjects with strong political beliefs. They subjected these people to startling stimuli then compared responses with their stated viewpoints on key political issues.
Those subjects who were the most startled by the unexpected or disturbing stimuli were also the ones who were most likely to favor such issues as increased defense spending, capital punishment, patriotism, and the Iraq War.
The people who were less startled by the stimuli, which included such things as a spider crawling across the face of a terrified person or loud, unexpected noises, tended to support foreign aid, liberal immigration policies, pacifism and gun control….
The study is not the first to tie certain patterns of brain response to potential voting behavior. Marco Lacoboni, a professor of neurology at UCLA, conducted a study last year in which he used a functional MRI to peer into the brains of those presented with political imagery and see how their brain response matched up with their political leanings.
“This is a really clever study,” Lacoboni says. “This research shows that all of our decisions are really rooted in biology. It’s not just the rational thought of the brain that we use to reach decisions, but also our emotional ones.”… Alford hopes his work may help foster greater understanding between conservatives and liberals.
“Much of the current political discussion disparages people’s intellectual ability,” he says. “Maybe we can be a little less uncivil in our political discussions when we understand that not everyone has the same gut reaction or the same insulation from that reaction.” – abc

Engineer in Deadly LA Train Crash Was Texting
Posted by Xeno on September 19, 2008
A Metrolink commuter train carrying 222 people collided head-on with a freight train Friday afternoon, killing at least 17 people. The AP’s John Mone has this report from the scene. (Sept. 13)
Federal transportation authorities say the engineer of a Southern California commuter train who ran a red light and slammed into a freight train last Friday — killing 25 people and injuring more than 130 others — was text-messaging on his cell phone. The engineer, Robert Sanchez, who died in the crash, never hit his brakes. [Ed. note: Corrected from original post that identified Sanchez as the conductor.]
Officials say they are investigating a report from a TV station, CBS2, that two 14-year-old boys exchanged messages with the engineer moments before the accident.
Today, the California Public Utilities Commission unanimously passed an emergency order to ban the use of cell phones and other personal electronic devices while operating a train.
The National Transportation Safety Board in Washington said today that “records … indicate that the engineer had sent and received text messages on the day of the accident, including some while he was on duty.”
Federal investigators also are looking into whether Sanchez’s back-to-back, split-shift workdays on the Metrolink commuter system, which began before dawn and ended at 9 p.m., could have played a role in the crash. – washpost
